I have a question, what is the best way to clean brass rail and do you think I messed-up by doing the following. My son has a 16 X  16 foot loop of G-gauge LGB brass rail track on our rear deck and he was using alcohol to clean it. We ran out of the LGB smoke fluid as has been stated here to be best for this on a number of occasions.

The alcohol was not getting the job done so I took my wet stone that I use to sharpen cutting tools and ran it down the top of the rail.

I used the alcohol as I would cutting oil on a blade and it did a real nice job of bringing back the rails shine.

I got to thinking that this would be murder on tubular track because of the nickel coating on it, what would happen if the brass rail has some kind of coating on it.

Well, what do you guys think did a screw-up or am I the proud owner of shiny brass track?

Oh yea the stone is fine, I could probably use it a hundred times with little loss of surface.

Didn't hurt a thing. I hate brass track . I was so happy to get nickel-silver rail when I was in N scale.
next time your at lowes or home depot get some emory clothe  and attach it to a block of wood with some screws . It'll be the best track cleaning bar you ever had.
You couldn't do this with O scale tin plate track but with the brass it'll be fine.
Make sure to run an alcohol rag down it after you use the emory clothe.
