My brother in law's Marx M10005 stream line train collection arrived today. One power unit, motor beyond repair; two Los Angeles, two Omahas; one Denver; one RPO car; one Squaw Bonnet.

Needless to say, they have seen better days, kept wrapped in box in attic.  All sheet metal is intact and what is bent can be gently straightened or re-curved, no paint peeling or chipping off.  Reading both Marx books, there is no suggestion for how to clean the lithographing.  I used some distilled water to get grime off one car but still looks grungy.  I know there is the school of thought that says leave well enough alone, but wife would like cars to look better before she adds them to her Marx display case.

Looking at book pictures I can't tell if cars were shiny or dull matte finish (now they are dull looking).  If we do clean them, can wax restore shine or will it abrade paint and look worst  or be a dust magnet?

Wife says to sacrifice the grungiest car to test cleaning techniques.

Suggestions?  I can post a car picture if necessary.

Good Evening RRMAN

I have used a product like Meguiars Cleaner/Wax on my shiny Marx tin and it seems to remove the gunk without removing the litho. I would try using it lightly on a small spot on your worst car to see how it works for you.  I use it by rubbing lightly to remove the gunk then put a coat on and let it dry so I can polish with a dry cloth to restore the shine. I have used it on my red M10005 and it worked fine, but your case may be different.

Hope this helps.

As a long time Marx guy, I agree with Dean. Meguires is the best.

So we bought the lifetime size of the wax and it does a great job of bringing back a shine to car. I soaked car in warm water with mild detergent, gently scrubbed with sponge, rinsed and dried it in low temperature oven for 15 minutes, let cool then polished car.

Only problem I had was in reading the directions, it says to wax in the shade, so had to hunt around house to find a dark shady place to polish car.....
