Just received my first prewar standard gauge set. Unreal condition. Track and pins have light rust. Dremel with a mild wire wheel? There is more track than I care to do by hand with sandpaper.
Any opinions?

That would work, but I would imagine that it would take quite a bit of time and you would go through a lot of wheels. I am sure a lot of people will chime in about the bristles getting into the gears and windings of the drivetrain.
I have used an abrasive disc on my drill and it makes short work of surface rust on track. It's basically a round Scotchbrite pad that chucks into your drill.
Another thing you can try is taking a small 1/4 sheet sander and loading a Scotchbrite pad onto it. This works well for hitting the tops of the rails, not so well for the sides.

Be aware that significant abrasion will remove at least some of whatever ever remains of the tin plating on the rails.
Perhaps soak in Evaporust?
Should be safe on the tin plate but does remove some of Lionel's black fishes. Soaked a couple of very rusty uncoupling sections--came out with no rust but also no remnants of what ever Lionel used for blacking. A treatment with gun bluing and all was well--not concours but very functional on the layout.
All good suggestions . Thanks. I like the scotch brite wheel idea. Think I'll try that. Looking to do all this kinda quick to get ready for the C-tree.
Then I need to fire up this 80 yr old gem and see how it goes.
