Tonight a friend in Canada sent me some pictures of a CN Diesel that hit a log truck in about 1998.

CN train that hit a log truck on the Redditt sub (between Winnipeg MB and Sioux Lookout ON) at Sunstrum, ON (mile 38). Lead unit was the 5146 a GMDL SD40. Seeing the truck on the crossing before hitting it with the train, the engineer hit the deck below the window level and the head end brakeman ducked down behind the wall and door under the middle windows, that leads down to the toilet. Both made it out alive. Anywhere there was glass, the pulp logs loaded cross wise on the truck, penetrated into the cab including through the number boards.

Good pictures. Was there any mention of the speed of the train?

Last week as I came up to our crossing, there was a log truck fully loaded, the cab past

the crossing and driver out on the opposite side, tightening down his load, which was

about 28 tons of 90'year old saw timber. good thing the KCS only runs on this line early

and late on this line, huh?!

But then, our trains only run at 25 mph, so suppose they would have time to stop.

When I got these pictures in my email one of the cab crew had given a brief discription of this accident as follows:

"Around 1998 I was riding the head end of the Canadian towards Capreol.  A dump truck ran across in front of us and we actually missed it by a couple of inches.  I dove into the well in front by the toilet, the second man was on top of me and the engineer dumped the air and was on top of us.

As soon as we stopped, we got out and were jumping up and down in the snow swearing our heads off.  The conductor came up grinning all over his face, said something about our underwear and he wanted to get going.  We told him in no uncertain terms we would go when we were good and f--- ready.  Something I will never forget."

Art, I agree that all involved were lucky. From the pictures and the statement from a crew member I don't think the Truck cab was struck. I think only the flatbed part was involved in the collision. From the pictures of the flatbed I can not see where it was hit so the log load must have been handing over the sides to hit the windows.

Art what do you think?
