make my own.
I make a foam or pine insert that fits inside my gondola
or hopper car. taper the edges and then off to my Dads house.
In his cellar is left over pee coal from the early 1960s when he had
a coal fired furnace. I scavange some. crush it up and glue it to
the blank that fits inside my gondola or hopper cars.

I have used nothing but St Charles Model Works for years, plus they offer more than loads for just coal. www.Trainloads.com

I had done coal loads using a good grade construction adhesive, small templates that fit the hoppers from Masonite and Black Beauty a sand blasting material. Eventually I used Krylon Gloss Black spray paint.
I have gotten some from Trainloads.com (also known as St. Charles Model Works):
A styrofoam form painted black and covered with activated charcoal as used in aquarium filters makes an acceptable load.

I ate at a coal fired pizza place the other day and asked the waitress if I could have a too go cup of coal. She went back and asked and brought back a quart of coal. I took it out of my car and it fell over on the floor. I didn't see it as I was backing up and it was crushed into nice small pieces.
Forum Sponsor Dennis Brennan sells coal in different sizes that make great loads.

Thanks for the recommendation.

trailloads.com is a good source, and they have a verity of sizes to fit most O gauge hoppers & gons.
I made some of my own using an insert and Coal from Highball Products. (Walthers stock No. 330-132) Use Scenic cement or mat medium to bond everything together. It may take a few days to dry but it works well
I have several of Don Kane's coal loads. I recommend them highly.
