I am new here as of today, so I apologise if this has already been discussed...
I primarily model in S and HO scales, but have always had an interest in 2-rail O scale. I model mostly southeastern US railroads, primarily SEABOARD AIR LINE, in the year 1957. I chose this year as it is the year that most of my favorite SAL locos were still in service.
I am particularly interested in the Baldwin Centipede locos. It is my understanding that both Lionel and MTH have produced Balwdin Centipedes, but only in 3-rail configuration... not 2-rail. If that is not true, someone please correct me. If it is true, then (and this is the purpose of my post) I'd like to know if it is possible to convert these monsters to a 2-rail configuration with scale wheels. I might even be interested in converting one to P:48 standard.
Having never seen one of these locos from either manufacturer first hand, I have not formed an opinion which one I prefer or which one best matches the SAL prototype, but I believe... based on photos... that the Lionel offering is best. At least their paint schems seem to be more accurate for the road numbers they chose whereas the MTH versions are all wrong - SAL #s 4501-4512 NEVER wore the Seaboard's 1st Citrus passenger scheme, only # 4500 wore it... and # 4500 was totally unique to all other production units in the first place.
I would appreciate any and all input on this matter. Having a model of this one locos would be all it took to finally get me started modeling in O scale!
