I don't think you would find yourself at the 10k mark. Probably still a bit higher, especially with the cost of tool steel. If you're interested in pursuing this, I recommend keeping an eye on industrial auctions after you learn roughly what your tooling might look like. You could pick up a similar sized die and have it re-machined (still pricey, if it's even possible) or you could get very lucky and just find a chunk of tool steel at auction for a decent price. That'll get you material and then you could work on affording the labor. In other words, don't give up! (if you're pursuing your own tooling)
