Just got one the other day...been wanting this engine since 1990!
Anyways, I never realized how long the coupler was on this thing. It looks like ridiculous. Anyone have any solutions on a shorter one? Would like to keep it tinplate but could go Kadee.

There was a scale coupler option: 700T-34
There is a shorter version available for the standard size knuckle coupler, but the long one is there, even though it runs on 072 track, the wide swing is needed to prevent the trailing car from derailing. If you want to try a shorter one, the part # is 690-8606-T60.

It sounds like the coupler is mounted improperly.

Be sure you are not mounting it in the scale coupler hole!
