Hello,

My Sunset/3rd Rail brass Mogul derails when rounding the 36" radius loop, even at slow speeds.

This doesn't happen on the 43" radius loop across the room, even when highballing.

This makes me realize that the only alternative is to tear down the benchwork supporting the 36"loop, and rebuild it to match the 43" loop.

I'll be able to salvage most of the flex track and some of the 2x4 supporting lumber, but I'll stil have to buy two 4x8 sheets of OSB for the new loop surface.

The extra layout area will cause a small intrusion into the lounging area of the Game Room between the entrance wall and the layout, but I'll still have sufficient room for circulation.

HEY BOB & ED,

Thanks...a consensus is building!

You know, even if I wasn't having derailments on that loop, I would still want to build a bigger loop anyway!

I'm happiest when I'm building or changing something!

Here's some of the tools I used when I began this project Last June:

HEY MATT,

I've aready made a new working drawing based on my decision to duplicate the 43" radius loop across the room.

This will still give me enough room to relax on the sofa with a Rum & Coke on the end table while lstening to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" on my powerful component Stereo System!

(The 15" Speakers are in the far corners of the room, under the 48" radius turns of the layout.)

Cool. I, too, like "Ride of the Valkyries". It's fantastic with the volume cranked up on a good stereo system.

Nice looking tool pile there BOH....ride of the who what?

Get to rebuilding that curve...that Mogul is too nice to be on the ties.

HEY BOB,

Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" is a powerful orchestral piece from the German opera "Die Walkure", and was featured in the film "Apocalypse Now" as accompanimental music for a Helicopter attack against a VC compound.

Go to YouTube and give it a listen to!

I knew that...

Some minor tweaking of the lead truck might be necessary.

According to NMRA RP-11 steam locos with up to about 14 foot rigid wheel base should be able to go around 36" radius in OW5.

I also wonder where the cause of the derailment is at since my GEM 2-6-0's will take a good tighter curve than that, albeit a different wheelbase and driver size may be in play there.  With a bit of tweaking, they will go under around a 30" radius.

TO THOSE WHO ADVISE ME TO FIND THE REASON FOR THE DERAILMENTS.....

I appreciate your concerns, but this is the excuse I wanted all along to get rid of that undersized loop.  I've got the room for a bigger one, so why not use it?

I'm looking forward to dismantling the loop and its supports, which are 2x4's, not Lynn Westcott's "benchwork", and rebuilding that corner of the room!

My Mogul's lead pilot wheels do have 1/4" of lateral play within their truck, but that's not important now, so ON WITH THE DEMOLITION!

You mentioned "Ail"...are you sick?   (Unless you meant "Ale")

1) Porte is a type of dark, similar to Stout, and since there are more than one brand, I made it plural.

2) Don't know why my spell check didn't fix the "Ail" but then I haven't been feeling too well lately anyway.  But yes, "Ale" it should have been.

Guess I should have to stayed with Maker's Mark anyway.
