O scale log cars for use with a 3-rail layout

Here is a custombuilt freelance 24 foot log car that will be used with a Lionel 0-6-0 switcher on a small switching layout. It is very similar to "narrow gauge" models. It is built entirely from wood with some metal details. The trucks are sprung Lionel Bettendorf style. The underside of the car includes a "tool box" and a brake cylinder. The log "load" is made from a wooden dowel.

The model is shown with "fresh" paint but it also needs "weathering" for more realism.

This log car design is based on the "narrow gauge" log car shown above. The steel rail is simulated but is not actually rail.

The pair of rails on the top of these cars were for Barnhardt Loaders. These were self powered crain's that could load adjacent cars with logs and then move themselves to the next car and load the car it had just been on ,and so on loading the whole train moving car by car. Just so you know what the purpose of the rails are.

AMCDave: About the "cheap" archbar trucks.  Is there a particular source you can share for those or is it just a call to Lionel?  Your log cars and other modeling are inspiring to see.

Like I said....supply has dried up of those.....bought many for $2 to 3 online or ebay....but no more.

Looking at the photo of the On3 model, perhaps HO scale rail (pulled out of a piece of sectional track) would look better than using wood?

Good idea for "rails"

Here is a pair of Lionel "archbar" style plastic trucks.  They will be used on another scratchbuilding project.
