While I have cut straight and curved post war Lionel track to make them fit, isolate rails for accessory function and to make electrical blocks, I have never had to cut down a crossover. I need to trim a 45 deg one to make it fit in a layout for the Lionel trolley to cross a branch line. This is an 027 size where the rail is secured to the plastic base. Anybody have any pointers on keeping the track in place, any pitfalls to doing this, who might have done this before?

Make sure whatever you cut with is very sharp and let the blade do the work. you can cut the rails down but if the part you throw away is missing the tabs that hold it to the base. I remove that piece of track and will it with epoxy and place it back stay away from the end that the pins go into.
Thanks fellows, good advice and that pic really helped too.
