Oh my gosh.  I just learned ( http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_..._interstate_highways ) that dashed lines on highways are 10 feet long, with 30-foot spacing.  That translates in O-gauge to 2 1/2" lines and 7 1/2" spaces.  That may be fine going across Arizona, but on smaller layouts, it seems grotesquely large.  How much foreshortening of these dimensions do people use to make them seem realistic on layouts?  I'm thinking of 1" lines and 3" spaces, but I hate to be so non-scale.

I'm researching this because a two-lane highway is going to be a prominent feature on my new layout, and I want it to fit gracefully into my O-scale setting. Thanks for any wisdom you can provide.

I think I did what Lee did, just through dumb luck.

And stripes in the 1950's are WHITE.  Lines are yellow in the 1960's.  That's a rough rule of thumb.

Just to close out this discussion: Thanks for your input, which gave me the freedom to do whatever looked good.  I chose 1.25" yellow dashes (only where passing is allowed!) separated by 1.5".  It's interesting how perceptions are off on this topic.  When a group of people (normal people, not railroad modelers!) were asked how long highway dashes were, most said they were 2' long, not the correct answer, 10'.  Thanks again.

A question that was in my mind answered! Another question when did the double line become so prevelent?

Afraid I don't know the answer to that one.
