DC transformer

Hello all, looking for recommendations for a basic (simple) transformer to run a small 2 rail layout. Will mostly be single locomotives, brass steam and 3rd rail diesels. I do have a large passenger train I would like to run with three powered locos and 8 lighted cars. Thanks, Scott.

He said simple. I use a small Variac, a surplus 115-24 Volt transformer, a three dollar bridge rectifier, a DPDT switch, and circuit protection on both ends. Only thing that actually costs money is the Variac - the three I got were $17 each, brand new.
