The wheel on my DCS controller is partially depressed and won't return to its original position. It still works, after a fashion, but doesn't respond without considerable pressure. Is there any hope of repairing this on my own, or should I just spring for another controller

If you take apart the controller there is a flat plastic piece that usually cracks. I glued mine twice on 1 controller. Working great after the second fix. I recently ordered a back up thumbwheel from MTH to have on hand just in case. There is one screw in the back in the battery compartment, then you have to carefully pry apart the halves along the seam. Should be a video here or on youtube if you use search function.
That would explain the cracking sound I heard when it broke. I'll give it a whirl. Any special trick to taking it apart?
Never mind my last. If I had read your post to the end, WILLYGEE, I would have seen the excellent guidance.
the thumbwheel is a replaceable part.
I put a piece of foam under one of mine to see if it would help.
The part can be glued with some luck. You will still do better by replacing the wheel assembly. The job is very easy to do and the part is cheap.

Thanks, Engineer-joe.
While you're in there put a piece of foam on the transceiver board to keep it fully seated. DCS Companion guide has a procedure i believe.
Marty is right!
I also agree with Marty ... If you have the skills to replace it , new is always better, PLUS the new thumb wheels are a better design with larger slots, you will like the control and feel of it.
