Quick Question, I am running all Lionchief Plus trains using their remotes.

I'm thinking about switching to the DCS Remote Commander system. The reason is DCS remote can control the smoke units.

Lionchief Plus remote can not turn smoke on or off.  Why they did not put this feature into  the remote is beyond me.

According to the manual if you use the remote commander for proto 2.0 and 3.0 engines you must use factory reset for the intended train.

In order to factory reset the train you must use the digital command system which means I have to buy that system in order to accomplish the reset. This makes no sense if I just want to use the remote commander to run my trains.  I'm better of just going with the DCS.

Question do proto 2.0 and 3.0 engines all come Factory Reset Ready?

I know the benefits of using Legacy and the DCS. I just like having individual remotes to share with my Grandchildren, Friends and family.

Its a pain in the butt to change the setting under the trains using Lionchief.  Not a big deal but then again I can not easily reach some trains on my layout.

No problems with Lionchief plus to date.  I am running 4 trains on individual loops.  I just would like the smoke option.

Thank you.

PS: I do not own any MTH engines to date.

Some things of which you should be aware:

  • The DCS Remote Commander cannot turn smoke on or off for PS2 or PS3 engines. For that, you need the full DCS Remote and TIU set; or DCS TIU, WIU and DCS App; or DCS Commander (different product from the DCS Remote Commander).
  • The DCS Remote Commander cannot control your Lionchief Plus engines at all. It can only control PS2/PS3 engines that have been reset to Factory settings.

Further, although newer PS3 engines can be Factory Reset using the DCS Remote Commander, older PS3 engines and all PS2 engines cannot. They require either the full DCS Remote and TIU set; or DCS TIU, WIU and DCS App; or DCS Commander.

  • The full DCS Remote plus TIU can only control your Lionchief Plus engines as conventional engines, and cannot control their smoke on/off. However, you can can continue to use your Lionchif remotes with those engines, even on the same tracks that the DCS TIU is using.
