I'm not sure what exactly has happened with one of my transplants,Circuit boards from a cheapy PRR 2-8-0 were  transplanted a few years  ago  into a Williams GP-9. The engine has run fine for years but derailed and now won't move in either direction.

 

  Ok I'll do a feature reset. no difference. still won't move, but everything else works...... Ok a factory reset.... Still won't move but the custom name is gone and the factory name appears" PRR 2-8-0" after a re-add. Everything works but that darn thing still won't move....  I know for a fact that a proto-2 will run without a battery but I happened to have a brand new8.4 volt MTH battery(green) handy so i replaced the battery and guess what , the engine runs fine .So what's the point of my post..... I believe a dead battery is worse than none at all in command  and can lead to all sorts of problems. This is the first time I've run across this type of failure.

 

I know the battery needs to be up to par for conventional (this one was dead as a door nail) but never suspected it would affect command operations. I believe the feature reset should have fixed the engine at least until power from the track was turned off. Nope!!

UH OH!!!!     I have stated this several times.................:-)  Battery state is the significant difference.  Actual battery state and PS-2 5V system can cause operational problems even in DCS.  Not every Revision, but I know I have seen it.  Additionally, I do believe dead batteries can lead to failure of the PS-2 5V board.  I personally would not leave a dead battery in a PS-2 5V engine. 

 

Doing testing even on PS-2 3V systems with BCRs.  As the BCR charges and if the charging circuit is faulty (Low charge rate), the volume will reduce and you won't have control of the engine until the BCR reaches voltage.  I think as the Power Supply maxes out, either protective features kick in, or high power demand microcontrollers like the audio amp don't operate.

 

The motor control relays are driven off the 5V power supply and the coil is a high load compared to the current needs of the microcontrollers.   G

Yes, built just like the patent, which even gives part numbers:-)  I have seen reduced volume when waiting for the BCR to charge.  I think the new PS-3 also do it as the super cap charges.  When I was messing with the BCR that took 5 minute to charge is when I noticed no control of the functions and very reduced volume until the BCR reached a threshold around 1.8Vs.  G
