I purchased a number, way too many, MTH Proto 1 locomotives years ago.  I took a never out of the box 30-1125-1 RK Southern Pacific Crescent Limited Steam Loco to the local TCA show a week ago. and sold it to a guy for $150.00.  He got it home, put the new battery in it that I gave him, and it would not run, and the only sound was a lot of static.  So last week I met him and picked up the locomotive and took it to our local MTH dealer, and put it on their test track, and sure enough the same the result. We also smelled an electrical  burning smell, not the smoke unit smell, coming from the tender with the shell off.  And a smell of the board also indicated something is amiss in the board.  I gave the guy his money back.  Now what do with the locomotive is the question.  Can it be fixed without spending a fortune, or should I put it on Ebay for parts only?

A basic reversing unit (on eBay; Dallee Electronics; WbB) will get it functioning. Sound means less to some than others. Had a RK ATSF Northern that I no longer wanted go belly up years ago; installed a used rev unit (from a TMCC upgrade on something), put on a mechanical coupler (P'coupler not needed), sold it at a train show with full disclosure. Ran flawlessly. Easy "upgrade" - AC in; DC out.

3rd Rail (Electric RailRoad) carries electronics, too.
