Brad,

I had an ESU LokSound installed 3 or 4 years ago. The sound is very good . The locomotive has had intermittant problems however. I run it at the Cherry Valley club in NJ. During shows it gets long distance mainline running time and quits running or stops and starts erratically. After a rest on the magic-cure-all-shelf, it will be back to normal again. My personal opinion is the decoder heats up after running continuously and causes the malfunctions. I replaced the motor once, but the problem returned. I am not the only one who has experienced this problem. Rich is trying to investigate what is going on, so if anyone is reading this who has had a similar experience, please let us (me) know.

Thanks.

Hi Brad,

I don't believe ESU has done anything one way or the other. I don't know much about them, other than they are somewhat of an enigma. I was in Ulm earlier this year (my wife's family is there) and tried to visit their place of busines. I couldn't even contact them to make an appointment.

I have their decoders in other locomotives and am very happy with the performance. As for the S12, I have no clue, and I am not an electronics type of person. Electricity....yes, solid state....no.

Hopefully other readers will share their experiences, so maybe we can track this down.
