Recently I purchased a set of MTH Premier F3’s painted up for my favorite railroad, Western Maryland, in the attractive red, white, and black “circus” scheme. I got these with the intent on weathering them, and I thought I’d share and update progress as I go along. I started tonight on the powered A unit #51.
I’m weathering these units based on a mix of prototype photos but am also using a bit of modelers license largely in that I’m retaining the original road numbers while attempting to replicate the weathering patterns found on these units after the WM was absorbed into the Chessie and were not taken care of meticulously like the WM did. Since 51 was eventually renunbered into 7149, I’m using prototype photos of that unit for the basis of my weathering. Here I faded out the lettering on the fireman’s side of the engine.
Fading out the front logo.
Another little bit of creativity done here with this primer gray panel on the engineers side. Couldn’t find any photos of this specific unit with this look but I saw it emulated by someone else and wanted to do it on mine. I love the look of this stuff.
In the “Chessie years” often times the paint began to chip heavily on the nose and elsewhere on the engine. It may look a bit odd here, but I’ll come together as powder is added.
Added some grime to the trucks and fuel tank, as well as dashed the engineers side and the nose with a layer of weathering powder before calling it a night. I think it looks good!
Obligatory running session before bed, of course!
Thanks for looking, much more to come as I finish up this unit and move on to the dummy!
