Hi All.

I need a little help.  I have a Lionel Lehigh Valley C420.  I put a battery in the unit so that the sounds would not shut off when I changed directions.  Yesterday, I ran the train with no problems, until I turned it off.  The sounds wouldn't shut down.  I let it go for 5 minutes, then I disconnected the battery.  I tried it again and the same thing happened.  Can anyone tell me what the problem is.  And yes, I did try a new battery with the same results.

Thank you.

Bob

Just a thought, but is it possible that your transformer is still supplying a small voltage even when it is apparently 'Off'.  Not enough voltage to cause anything else to function, but just enough to fool the locomotive's circuity into thinking that it is still powered. A simple way to check would be to either un-plug the transformer from the wall, or to disconnect the 'hot' lead from the transformer. Or you could remove the locomotive from the track and see if shuts down properly then.

This might be just one of my strange thoughts, but I have heard of transformers not completely cutting power.

Sorry about the delay in answering, I'm at work right now.  I believe that I am going to send it to Lionel for repair.  In response to N.Q.D.Y.  I don't believe it's the transformer causing the problem.  If I remove the locomotive from the track, It will still run.  Best bet is to let Lionel take a look at it.

Thanks to you all.

Bob

Sorry that my idea didn't pan out, but it was worth a try before shipping the locomotive back for repair. As John said, my thought was that a low voltage remaining in the track could have been just sufficient to prevent the shutdown logic from activating.

I'm sure that Lionel will fix it for you though.
