Brad & Gary,

For one it can't be done, can't mix PS2 and PS3 sound files

That would be, at least somewhat, incorrect.

Well that answers that.

No, it does not.

The fact is that one can, indeed, put a 3 volt PS2 Sound File in a PS3 engine without any ill effects. Further, because PS3 engines have their speed control parameters in the engine's Chain File rather than its Sound File, the engine's scale speed isn't affected, either.

Their are no real disadvantages to the PS3 engine having a PS2 (3 volt) Sound File.

Exactly.

The protosound format isn't public but some have determined aspects of it.  For example here:  http://www.silogic.com/trains/ADPCM.html

If you have a PC,  you can download the program on that page and use it to play ".mth" files -- well the clips in them -- either PS2 or PS3.

In theory perhaps with some software of your own design you could extract the PFA announcements in one and place it in the other.

Perhaps that file would upload to your engine and it would work...     There's some discussion of experiments in this area at the bottom of the page from above.

Engine House Hobbies replaced the failed Proto 2 boards in my GG1 with PS3 boards; however, they had issues loading the PS3 sound files into the engine so they loaded the Proto 2 files into the GG1.  From a running perspective, I can not see any difference in the operating performance before the replacement and now.

So you can't do 5v to 3v.  But as long as both are 3v you are good to go?  I did not know that, thanks

Gary, many locomotives with 5 volt boards have upgraded sound files.  In the early days of PS2 if we wanted a 5 volt file converted to a 3 volt file we had to contact MTH to get it done.  If you look at any of your 5 volt loco item numbers , you may see MTH shows an upgraded sound file on the MTH site.  I recently converted a PS-1 Yellowstone to PS-3.  If you look at the PS-1 item number (20-3030-1) you will see MTH has converted that to an upgraded file that can be used in the upgrade kit.  The upgrade file is a PS-2 3 volt file that can be used in a PS-2 3 volt board or a PS-3 board.

Like I stated the 5 volt boards may have an upgraded file to put in your PS-2 and PS-3 engines.  . If it does not, you know a guy who knows a guy who can get it done for you.

Gary,  That might not work.  If your 2009 is a PS-2 3V the new Mohawk would be a PS-3 file.  You can not put a PS-3 file into a PS-2 5V or 3V.  Doesn't work in reverse.

PS-3 only into PS-3 based boards.

PS-2 3V into PS-2 3V and PS-3

PS-2 5V only into PS-2 5V.   G

Well that sucks, but thanks for the clarification.

My uncle is getting a MTH CNW E4 upgraded from PS1 to PS3. MTH hasn't made a PS3 E4, on the product page for the PS1 model (20-3034-1) is has the upgrade file, when he was taking it to get upgraded, I asked the dealer if he could put the PS2 sound set in it, he said he can't. But I could put that file in and it would work?
