I bought a Lionel command base and cab one and will start converting coventionals to TMCC. I'm checking on kits at The Electric Railroad Company and they are referencing a R2LC (Radio receiver board). Do I need this board to operate my TMCC engines in DCS or is it more than a receiver?

Yes, you need it. It's an integral part of the TMCC electronics.

The R2LC comes with the ERR kits, it's not extra.
So, not only do I need the TMCC board I will also need an R2LC/R4LC Which they don't tell you about. I did e-mail them about the engine I want to upgrade, The Dale E. Jr GP-38 6-28878 from the set 7-11005. Told them I am using MTH DCS and want to upgrade to about the same level of operation as the PS2/3 and what they recommend. I got back "Did you chech out our web site?" I hope it get better.
No, the R2LC is included in the price of every ERR kit that requires them. That would be the AC Commander, DC Commander, and the Cruise Commander. No extra purchase required!
If you want cruise control, the Cruise Commander is the product you want. Check with Boxcar Bill on the forum here, he sells them at a discount.
The product description and the manual are a little vague about what it comes with, I did send them an e-mail again but I'm still waiting for a reply.
You do realize that you still need a TMCC or Legacy command base if you want to run TMCC/Legacy locomotives with your DCS remote, right?
Thanks John I'll do that!
I just bought one, will be delivered by the end of the week.
John, does the cruise commander work as well as the DCS speed control on the post war engines. I hate the run away down the hills thing.
Most PW locomotives have AC motors, and won't work with the Cruise Commander. Exactly what locomotive are we talking about?
I guess I need a lesson on transformers. I thought the transformers for modern train sets turned AC into DC and that ALL the newer engines were DC. I am running my post war Lionels (2020 and 2056 to name a couple) with the same transformers I'm running my new conventionals with (Z-750 with the controler from the MTH sets). What part did I get wrong.
Nope, most three-rail locomotives run on AC, and Legacy and TMCC require it. DCS will run on DC or AC.
The Z-750 is an AC transformer.
so you are saying that the engine itself converts ac to dc as the can motors are dc units.

Yep!
kind of sucks for the PW's. I can upgrade to TMCC but not cruise control, sounds like they will still run away down the hills. Will put that on the back burner. I still have a K-line and a few new lionels to convert (like 5 or six). Thanks John.
I have several things with AC motors, you just have to manage them as they run, but they can still be enjoyable.
If you REALLY have to have a PW locomotive with cruise control, Frank Timko Repairs can install a DC can motor in may PW locomotives.
Thanks, I'll consider that. I like my PW's (have serveral on display) and I am considering putting up a ceiling train in my living room, flat, slower speeds, that might be just the place for them. Run them as they came.
