Hello everyone,
Over the years the manufacturers have offered engines that the respective rr had only one of in multiple cab numbers. A couple of examples are Lionel's offerings of the NS heritage units, and MTH's BNSF golden swoosh ES44DC. My question is, would the extra cab numbers be considered fantasy?

In the strict sense, I would think anything with out a real counterpart is fantasy. In practice, I think most folks ignore the numbers for common rolling stock. Locos, however, probably get a bit more scrutiny.

Answer: I am still a child at heart, as I do not have that "spirit of seriousness" one often sees in grown-ups.

Agreed. The entire hobby is fantasy. None of us, even our scale folks, haul goods or passengers from one place to another for profit.

Fantasy and emulation are not the same thing. I just completed a scratch-bashed 2-4-0 cab-forward. I did, however, attempt to make it as "realistic" as my talents, goals and starting points would let me. I don't consider it a "fantasy"; I do, however, consider it pretty amusing.
