Yes I run smoke!!!
For steam I run the smoke on high, and it looks best at speed, where steam develops its greatest horsepower.
Diesels usually on low- except when down on its knees- I put the train brake on almost to stall, the smoke on high, the volume up high- WOW! Yes I'm a steam fan, but we all know diesels have THE tracktive effort at low speed with a heavy train.
Someday I'll have a train room with skylights to enhance the visual of smoke even more.
Thanks for asking!
Rick
"Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!" You bet I do!! I really like it.
I have no health issues, though. And, come hot and humid July and August when I seal up the place for a/c, I will cut back.
I wish I could get diesel black smoke.
Other than a postwar 2046, my only steam engine will be the Polar Express Berk I ordered. And, you bet MegaSteam Maple Sugar will be coming out of it around the Christmas layout! (I will have it by Christmas 2014, right? )

When my whole basement is not filling up with smoke,it's time to tear my engines apart and re do my smoke units.Nick
PW/MPC: Yes, because there is no cut off switch for the smoke units.
MTH: Yes and no at home. Low smoke if I do. Lots if I am at HTOS.
Lionel Conv. with Cut off switch: Hogwarts No. PRR 0-4-0 Maybe. SP 0-6-0 Maybe.
Smoke: Megasteam. Marx 333 and 666: That Pepe LePew Marx flavor. Others: Nada, except 726 with a K-Line SP Vandy tender: Oil.
All smoke units turned to off, Maybe when they have black smoke for the Diesels I will turn the smoke on. White smoke coming from a diesel just isn't right,
I'm a little jealous of you guys that the smoke doesn't bother. Maybe it was my foolish days of smoking when I was young, but I just can't handle it any more. I do really like the looks of a smoking engine, especially the steam engines.

Art. Have you tried Megasteams "Nada" non scented fluid? I've never had a problem using it. Some flavors can get to me but I can run Nada all night with no issues..
Doug even with your Nickel Plate Road/NS ES44ac?
YES, that engine belongs to my Dad, and it always gets filled with smoke. I think when I shot that video for YouTube it was running low, and I had turned it down. Like all MTH engines, it will smoke you right out of the house if you let it.

I don't have a sense of smell so that never bothers me. However, if the smoke volume is heavy for a long period of time, my eyes start to burn.
Yep, Smoke all all the time. One of the best if not "the best" feature in O scale. Doesn't hurt my weathering one bit.

I do find some of the scents (mostly the Mega-Steam that I have tried) bother me a little, but their Eliminator doesn't seem to bother me at all. I have not tried their Nada scent, only a few of their holiday scents. I also like MTH Christmas scent and find it does not bother me. My wife gets bothered by them long before I do though. Those along with the Nada might be worth a try if you want to have some engine smoke once in a while. May try the Nada myself.
I also smoked for many years (quit in 2001) and maybe that's why some of it bothers me now? Can't get within 50 feet of a cigarette anymore without gagging.
I hardly ever run smoke at home unless I have visitors, but when my club is set up at a show I run it wide open - steam and diesel. The kids of all ages love it.
I appreciate the suggestions about the Nada version and may give it a try. My sensitivity to smoke has gradually increased over the years. First it was pipe smoke that I couldn't handle and then it was cigars, but now it's any smoke. I even used to love the smell of leaves burning in the fall, but now it gags me.

Chugman,
The Lionel premium fluid pictured by KC works really well and has a slight odor like the JT's Nada.
I limit the smoking for show off time due to the residue effects mentioned and health restrictions of some family members. Active ventilation is recommended.
I have turned the train room into a fog just to see it. I had a little too much egg nog during the holiday and ...
My house is smoke free.
(think about it)
Yes, all locomotives are set to high smoke! Why not for the necessary realism?
I also have smoking caboose. I keep the units filled to achieve the highest level of smoke. I use Mega Steam fluid.
No smoke. I only run Electrics and Diesels. Plus I have a sensitive nose. And the layout is around the walls of the master bedroom. So smoke wouldn't be a wise choice.
Even my GG1 smokes! More smoke? absolutely YES !
I'm not allowed to "smoke" in the house...
I do at the club! Mostly everything.
I used to when I had steam locomotives, but now with diesel only I turn off the smoke.
The more smoke the better. I only run steam but if I had diesels with smoke, i would use them, too.
If/when my wife complains about the smoke, I put more fluid in and notch up the voltage.....

The smoke bothers me, no matter what scent it is. Even NADA. I'm also allergic to cigarettes.
I will run smoke for a short while if people are over and they are interested.
