The November 1987 issue of Classic Toy Trains contains an article about Lionel's development of the smoke feature.  A photo of Mr. Mazzone (probably taken in the 1980s) appears on p. 45.  For copyright reasons, obviously I can't paste the photo here, but you might be able to view or purchase a back issue of the magazine.

CTT is very good about using their pics........if you ask them and credit them. Some years back when we were discussing a scene from Frank Ellison's Delta Lines, specifically, the "Quick Sand & Gravel" scene, I asked Carl Swanson (then, CTTs editor), if I could use a photo of it from an old CTT issue in a discussion here. He said with the caveat that is be referenced:

......from CTT issue  (month), (year). Used with permssion of the editor........BUT, you have to ask.......(and I cleared it with Alan, too).
