Does anyone use the 400E to haul the STATE Coaches ? Will the 400E haul 7 STATE Coaches ?

Hi Norman,

The 400e, 381e, and later the 408e we’re all catalogued in state sets. The 400e was also catalogued with the Blue Comet set, and the work train sets.

I have a black 400e (a MTH/LTC reproduction with Protosounds 3) and it pulls my 7 state cars just fine, here is a video of my set from an August SGMA show at the Greenberg Show at Oaks, Pennsylvania:

The MTH or LCT contemporary 400E's with can motors are best suited to haul seven state cars.

Hey Norman,

I'm still having email issues so I'll post the pictures here. If you are trying for that scale look I think the 400E is a better match to the State cars. I use the 400 to pull comet cars too.  The 392 or 390 matches up better with the comet cars.  400E's match up nicely with the 418 passenger cars & 200 series freight cars.

The traditional-motored 400E's are not good pullers for more than four state cars.

Was the engine underpowered or was it a traction problem? 

Mostly underpowered, but a little lack of traction as well.

400E's are best pulling State cars, those blue comet cars are too small for it. Fortunately we can buy the loco and cars, Lionel only made one or two catalogued sets using that combination back in the day.
