I seen this Dorfan set at a estate sale today the locomotive has serious metal rot but the passenger cars are in good shape and box is nice with inserts. I took some quick photos. I was wondering what the market value of this set is? $275 seems way to high to me but will go back tomorrow and see if its still there and maybe make an offer.

That price seems high as Dorfan is known for suffering from poor casting and zinc pest. The passenger cars look okay, but the engine is not that great. They went out of business rather quickly.
I just did a look on eBay completed items the three passenger car go for 60 to 100 dollars. No sales on the loco but one is offered at $95 with no motor. so I think it's way over priced

I checked my inventory and I have paid between $200 and $350 for most of my sets. Quality varies, a few run, others I have modified to make them runners. I would like to see more pictures of the engine, but if the basic casting is good, Price might be Ok. I know I'd love a blue 51 added to my roster. I could be interested depending on the casting. The missing paint on the engine is pretty normal on these.

The brown one is pretty hard to find, but a bit high at $95.00 for a static display piece. It would cost me another $80.00 or so to make it a runner.
My Uncle Walter and Father had this same train set!...It is from 1928. Only the passenger cars still exists and my cousin has them. The #51 crumbled away years ago.
Thanks everyone for the replies, I decided to pass on the set. The loco was in pretty bad shape most likely not easy to ever get running. Hopefully someone will pick it up and give it a good home.
