Can anyone give me some feedback on an item I just purchased at an estate sale.  I got a bin of MPC stuff which included a #8111 DT&I Orange switcher with green marker lights.  I almost dropped it when I turned it over and the horn began to blow!! The battery was still in with thankfully no acid damage!

I didn't think Lionel made low-end diesels with horns in the early 70's and can NOT find any evidence to support this.  I thought perhaps the shell was placed on a postwar motor and frame, but the frame seems to be from the MPC era and the headlight mount uses a plastic piece to hold the lightbulb.  Could the owner have taken it to a a hobby shop and requested a "horn" upgrade? Yet the wiring from the relay to the horn is cloth-like....maybe both the relay AND the horn were added later?

photos attached to help.

thanks in advance for your feedback.

In every way, it looks like a PW frame to me.

I can think of a few locomotives that had sheet metal fuel tanks, as pictured above: the 633, 634, 635, and 645. All those engines had tire traction motors, not magnetraction. At least some of them used that lamp socket / bracket assembly for #19 bulbs.
MPC continued to use the same frame, including the lamp socket, but switched to a different bulb after just a little while. I think the MPC frames are usually embossed with an MPC part number.

Update: I guess the 617 had those metal tanks, 3 position e-unit, a horn and 2 axle magnetraction. So maybe it is a 617 chassis.

Thank you ALL for your feedback... I am almost convinced that it is a PW frame, however all of the pictures in greenberg's guide display the NW-2 switchers with a metal frame that completely surrounds the coupler.  Notice in my attached photos this model does not have metal underneath the coupler which I is what I have seen in the pics of other DT&I's for sale on eBay....

any thoughts?
