Any ideas on toning down the UFO appearance of Lionel steamers that are so equipped? Simple is better, as in externally applied nail polish (?) or some other substance to dim, but not completely occlude their illumination?

Hi, Ron - thanks for posting. Have you actually done this? My brain can’t fathom how clear anything will be a dulling agent.
Not with green, but I have with yellow to cover the bright white LED and give it an incandescent look.
Not as simple but you can still get the older ceramic LEDs from Lionel that they used to use here. Also you can add higher value resistors in series with the LEDs. I use 3.3K resistors with my super bright headlight LEDs and they are still pretty bright.

Just keep increasing the resistor value. I found for some of the bright class lights/markers that a 10K resistor tames them.
