I am repairing a Lionel 238E and I completely rebuilt the E Unit and I could get it to enter forward and neutral but it did not run in reverse so I put another E Unit in the locomotive and I am having the same issue. It goes forward and neutral but no reverse. What am i doing wrong?? Any help is appreciated.

There is a circuit error somewhere if forward runs OK, like a grounded brush.

That lever is riveted to the frame of the E-Unit, which is affixed to the parallel plates of the motor - chassis ground - and as such is common to the field laminations and bulb grounds.

Thanks for your info... I will recheck for a possible grounding issue.

The ground on that lever only completes the circuit for the solenoid, which by your description is working OK, so the problem is on the left side of the circuit.
Thanks Rob... I will trace back on left side of circuit.
