I recently installed an ERR Cruise Commander in a Williams FA-1. I wired it correctly and even had an experienced installer go over it.  I experienced this problem described in another thread:

"All works perfectly! EXCEPT, when I hook up the Railsounds Commander it works great and sounds great for about 30 seconds then it becomes unresponsive to Cab1 commands. It either stops or moves slowly and the engine sounds are still on but no horn, bell, cab chatter, just engine revving. The only way to stop it is to cut the power. Then when I apply power again everything works, for about 30 seconds then unresponsive again."

I've had the board replaced twice, the R4LC replaced three times, still the same problem.

I have an original Cab1 and base connected to a DCS TIU with a PowerHouse 135 connected to a variable channel on the TIU with a DCS WiFi unit. All my TMCC engines work just fine with this setup except for the ERR FA-1. The installer said he has DCS on his TMCC layout and the engine ran with no problems.

As a troubleshooting test, I disconnected everything, connected a CW-80 directly to the track with the TMCC command base connected directly to the track also. The engine ran perfectly. But I want to add DCS back into the system. I moved the PowerMaster to a fixed channel on the TIU, same problem. I had the TIU sitting on top of the PowerHouse and a Z750 (for TIU power). Now, I moved the PowerHouse and Z750 away from the TIU and the engine worked a little better.

Next, since it worked with the CW-80 connected directly to the track I thought I'd go back to my original setup from years ago and connect the PowerHouse to my TPC400 then to fixed output of the TIU then to track (passive mode) with TMCC Command Base also connected directly to the track. The FA-1 works great!

Also on another note, there's TIU in active mode vs passive mode. After running TMCC engines with the DCS app I find it easier and better to use my Cab1. The Cab1 and TPC400 run conventional engines better particularly in slow speed because the DCS app goes from 0 straight to 5 with nothing in between but the Cab1 has smooth operation from 0 on up. I also prefer running TMCC engines using Cab1 over DCS app.

After all that, if you're still reading this saga, has anyone had problems with TMCC and DCS especially with an ERR Cruise Commander? And does anyone have the same experience with conventional and TMCC operations with the DCS app vs Cab1?

I have 6 diesel locomotives I've converted with either the ERR Cruise Commander (2) and Sound Commander or AC Commander (4) and older Railsounds boards (2.5 & 3). I have no problems running them on my layout which has both TMCC and DCS. In fact I usually run everything from my DCS remote. Is the command base on your layout connected to the ground/common rail after the output side of the TIU? It's possible that the ERR boards do not like what ever chopped sine wave the TIU outputs on the variable channel if the channel is not at  it's maximum voltage. Try connecting the Powerhouse to a fixed channel on the TIU, the to the track, and connect the command base to the ground on the output side of the TIU. If the locomotive works fine that way then you can be pretty sure that the boards do not like something in the way the TIU variable channel chops the sine wave.

Thanks for your reply Lou.  When I had my original setup, PowerHouse connected to TIU Variable Input 1, Command Base connected to Variable Output 1, then to track, ALL my TMCC locos worked properly except for the ERR loco with sound board connected. When sound board was disconnected, the ERR loco worked fine. I did try connecting PowerHouse to Fixed Input and TMCC Base to Fixed Output. Same problem.

Now with PowerHouse connected to a TPC400, then to TIU Fixed Output (passive mode), then to track with Command Base connected directly to outside track, ERR works fine.

So it's not the variable channel that's the problem. It's still a mystery. I don't know why it works for you but it didn't for me.

Hmm. When you say you've had the board replaced twice do you mean the main board of the Cruise Commander or the Sound Commander board? It's not the radio board since that has been changed 4 times.

Logically it has to be some issue with your equipment or layout wiring, since it works fine on another DCS/TMCC layout.

Sorry, I might have gotten my details mixed up. Cruise board was replaced 3 times with the second one DOA. R4LC replaced 4 times. I'm not sure exactly how many times the sound board was replaced, but probably 3 times.

Maybe when I moved the PowerHouse and Z750 away from the TIU it made a difference? And adding passive mode definitely made a difference. Again, I never had problems with any other TMCC loco only the ERR Cruise when Railsound board was connected.

Being that the boards have been changed it has t be something with the wiring of components on your layout. I'm kinda out of ideas.

Yeah, I'm out of ideas too. This was all tested on a simple oval of Fastrack on the floor with just power and command wires connected to the track. Thanks for your effort.
