My son's PWC N&W J Class number 746 engine (the one from the PWC Space Freight set of a few years ago) has developed a strange crew talk problem.  When we power up the track, random crew talk announcement start up, before the engine is started up.  Once we hit the start up button, the engine starts up normally and the crew talk works as it is supposed to.  The same thing happens upon shutdown.  The engine shuts down normally (including the appropriate crew talk dialogue).  Once it is completely shut down, the random crew talk announcements start up.  There can be anywhere from one to three or four random and unconnected announcements in either case.  I have tried resetting the engine a couple of times to no avail.  I opened up both the engine and tender and everything seems to be connected properly.  Any ideas?

Thanks much guys.  I think (hope?) I have the problem solved.  I opened up the tender to take a look.  Everything looked to be correctly seated and it was clear which were the sound chips.  Since I did not have a PLCC extractor, I was just planning to take a look.  As I was carefully looking things over, I noticed something on top pf the speaker.  It was a staple -- just like you would see in a staple remover after it had been removed from a document.  I removed the staple, put everything back together, did a reset and now it seems to be working fine.  I am speculating that the staple was somehow shorting out the sound system.  When I turned the tender over to remove the screws, it may have shaken loose and was attracted by the speaker magnet.  It was probably a leftover from the manufacturing process.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Mike
