I am servicing three smoke units on an ABA SantaFe Lionel Set.The two power units were serviced and are working like new actually better than new since I enlarge the air intake but the A Dummy needed a new resistor. I replaced the resistor and tested the unit. It smoke very heavy and the fan will not turn off. The fan did work when I first inspected the unit. Is it the board? The power units are woking fine.

You didn't mention what brand loco. If this is MTH DCS, I suggest you post on the OGR DCS forum, where operation of smoke units it the subject of several threads. I suggest you start a new one.
RJR, it's LIONEL. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Steve
Try reprogramming. What is the product number of the set.
Bill
Hi Bill, I can't give you the number, I purchase the set new in 2010/2011 and I don't know how to reprogram it. I did test it with the shell off could it not be receiving the command because the antenna is not connected? And were can I find info on reprograming? Steve P.S. I received the parts. Thank's

Do you still have the original box? The product number would be on the box ends, starting with a 6- prefix.
The boxes are in a place that I can't get to because of my physical condition I can get them most likely next week. Steve
If these engines are the blue and yellow paint scheme. You could have a bad Radio board, AC regulator or the smoke unit PCB. Take a look here

Programming is on page 21.

Thank's Bill,I never got that booklet with the set, I have the silver and red set. I try resetting the unit in the AM. Thank's Steve
Steve, If I remember this was the basic TMCC set with the dumb smoke units. Not sure if the B unit is command controlled. When the fan runs does it still smoke, meaning the element is hot too? Just looked it up, if this is the 14588 you do have an R2LC in the dummy B and the dumb smoke unit uses the 8ohm resistor and it has the ACREG to control the smoke unit. The fan gets power from the heater input. So it if still runs the heater has power too, unless Lionel wired this uniquely.
I would try the reset as Bill and others mentioned. G
Steve,
Is this a 6-34573 Legacy engine, if not then it is probably the 6-14588 set that G mentioned. Either way do the reprogramming. If you have 6-14588 the programming can be found here
http://www.lionel.com/media/se...ents/71-4588-250.pdf
Look on page 22.
If that don't help you, the radio board and the regulator is still suspect.
Bill
Bill,G, I got my son to get the boxes for me. the set is 6-34573 AA powered non powered.I also have B powered 6-34579. I tried reprogramming several times this morning with no success,I also switch the board on top of the smoke unit with one I know is working correctly but it did the same thing, unit smoking fan running won't shut down. Its the Dummy that I having the problem with. When I reprogramed the instruction stated to do one unit at a time I only tried the the Dummy unit. Both the powered units are working so well I did not won't to fool with them. If it's not broke don't fix it. Steve
Steve,
Will it turn off with the smoke switch.
Bill
I will have to check it again.I can't remember if I check that. I will get back to you in about a half hour or so. Steve
Bill, It did turn off with the switch. Steve
Steve,
It's probably the AC regulator, but could be the radio thats bad also.
Bill
I would not try to use the smoke if the regulator has shorted! I recently witnessed a spectacular smoke display when the regulator bit the dust on a steamer, it didn't last long, but it was more smoke than I've ever seen a locomotive spew out! I had to replace the smoke unit PCB, resistor, wick, and of course, the regulator. Track voltage on a 6 or 8 ohm resistor will quickly destroy the smoke unit PCB and resistor. For this one, it only took about 30 seconds to cook the board.
Hi John, Man when I saw the amount of smoke I though the unit was on fire. This is the unit that had a bad resistor in it and when I replaced it the smoke output was like I had never seen before. The entire garage was filled in seconds. Steve
That's almost surely the regulator, that's the symptoms when they go. Instead of the 5-6 volts of regulated power for 5-6 watts on the resistor, you get the full 18 volts of track power. When that happens, you get on the order of 40-50 watts! Needless to say, that kind of power (and heat) inside that little smoke chamber cooks everything very quickly! However, it is spectacular to see it happen.
For about sixty seconds you will have one of the best smoke unit available.
Bill
The look on the owner's face was fantastic was fantastic when the locomotive came out of the tunnel and was pouring smoke out. When it came around the curve past us, I could smell the burning fiberglass, and I hit the kill switch on the layout. I was too slow, the damage was done!
You guys had 30 secs to hit the halt button and didn't! Where there is smoke there is fire G
Truthfully, we were standing in awe as it came out of the tunnel, it took a few seconds for it to sink in what was happening. I had never actually seen one of these go in person, though I've fixed them after the fact.
Not me G I'am as quick as a cat......... John must be slowing down or he needed a little extra work?
I was just enjoying the vast quantities of smoke. And there's not always fire where there's smoke, or all my steamers would be burning up!
All I know is that it scared the c___ out of me. The post war SantaFe has always been my favorite engine and when it happened my first through was I just set my favorite engine on FIRE and their goes a s___ load of money up in smoke.
