We will be moving in the near future which will give me the opportunity to eventually expand my layout.  Right now getting ready to show our home and the train room can’t be a train room any more.  I have a  5’ x 9’ layout  mounted to Homasote, onto plywood, on a 2x4 frame.  I am removing accessories right now but think that I can move the layout top in 1 piece less the frame.  I have a screw in every hole of my Fastrack so it’s secure.  I will remove the lanterns off of the switches but wonder what I should put over each LED bulb to protect them from any “bumps” or scrapes along the way.   Any suggestions on how to pad them?

You likely have a 2x4 centered in your framework.  Double it with a second 2x4 which will be off center.  You can then take a saw and cut the frame and top between the two 2x4s which will give you two easily manageable ~4.5'x5' pieces.

You can reassemble the pieces with bolts and a plate on each side across the cut.  We did this with out first layout (1x3s).  It has worked for 20 years.
