Has anyone had any success with replacing these bulbs and are there any tricks in doing it? I have two switches that the bulbs has died. I know you can order complete replacement lantern stands from Lionel, but it would make more sense to replace just the bulbs.

You just have to take the switch stands apart and wire in the bulb, it's not that difficult. I recommend adding a 220 ohm series resistor when you're doing this so you don't have to replace the LED again. 
I have done a couple, and also ordered a couple. Not difficult, but not easy, either. This PDF is very helpful.

The cost of a new stand is almost cheaper than the cost of labor to install a bulb. Looks like a rainy day project when there are not other repairs to be done.
Remember adding the resistor inside the switch if you don't want to be doing this repair again real soon.
I have one to repair as well, and I ordered 2 replacement LEDs from Lionel with my big year end order. Got charged for em too... they just didn't get packed. I robbed an old switch stand from an O36 to get me by. Does anyone know what type/size aftermarket LED will fit these stands?
Any old 3mm white or warm white LED will do the trick.

How much would it cost to just order a new complete switch stand unit? What part number would you use?

Guys. A 3mm LED (cool or warm color) will do. They are pennies each. Put on your magnifiers and solder one in.

I see a Lionel 610-2045-126 Switch Stand w/LED (prewired) on your website for $6.50. Is that the wrong one for the O36 Fastrack switch?
I have replaced three LEDs, and there is a lot more involved than just soldering one in, as you can see in the tutorial I posted above. The good news is that I haven't had anymore go bad in five or six years on my 24 switches.
You are right. I had to get my glasses out to read the Lionel part number 'fine print'. I also checked and we sell them for $7.50 . Me bad. Harry
