Hi everyone,

i have been using Scenic express coarse flock for the Trees I've made so far. They look ok but not up to the standard I'd like and have seen on this forum.  A lot of the flock falls off even though it has been coated heavily with cheap hair spray. I think I'm using the wrong stuff, it doesn't seem fine enough.imageimage

My next attempt I will be using the Scenic express super Leaf product hoping for better results. What is your favorite material?

I have better luck using Mod Podge Matte (or any artist's acrylic matte medium).  Mixing one part of it with 7 parts water, gives you an approximate 16% solution which allows it to run relatively easy thru a spray bottle.  Spray it on, apply your ground foam, and let dry thoroughly.  Apply more coats if required, but let dry thoroughly between coatings.

Acrylic mediums are totally waterproof when dry, so they won't re-liquefy when wet.  This is what allows you to add more coats without the fear of losing initial coatings.  Not so with hairspray or Elmer's white glue - they will soften up if wetted down after drying.  Which incidentally, is still useful for some other scenery applications.

Two things about hairspray....

BE SURE to get the MEGA-HOLD and ODORLESS variety....if you're determined to use the stuff.  The odorless is really important....unless you don't mind having your layout have that lingering bouquet ofhair salon.

The other thing about hairspray...suggested above in Paul's response...is that it does not render the finished tree...or hair-do!...waterproof.  C'mon, guys!.....think about it!!  Would your wife/squeeze really put something on her hair to hold it in place that can't be washed out????   And, by the way, that includes HUMIDITY!!!  Got a humid environment/basement??........you'll have green leaf drop, for sure!  The 'Mega-hold' stuff gives a hair-do only a slightly better fighting chance in high humidity or a breezy day.  But, unless  you're in Las Vegas, Phoenix, or Death Valley....DRY climates....you'll be disappointed in the long run with hairspray coupled with ventilation breezes, and table-shaking from klutzy visitors to pounding Big Boys.

Diluted matte medium, Scenic Cement,.....acrylics.

But, TEHO, I say....
