I just finished my fire scene with 3 buildings on fire and the fire dept on the block with flashing lights on vehicles, smoking buildings, faux flames and rescue helicopter.

Well to tell the truth, I bought a lionel and MTH premade houses on fire and wanted to make my own. I wanted it to look real and have the whole block filled with flashing lights, smoke and the fire seen burning.The project had really no rime and reason except 1- make it look real 2 -impressive with flashing lights and people 3- great flame and smoke.
You could say "The fire started in a abandoned building and the heat and ashes went to adjoining buildings."

Where did you find the modern fire trucks? All I can ever find are trucks from he 20's
Jack pearce is where I bought them he places the awlsome lights in, here a e mail that I got from him.
Much of what I do is lighting vehicles that people send me from their layouts. I do try to pick up vehicles that I know light up well and have them available at the York PA show. I have some fire vehicles (mostly Corgi in 1:50 as they do up well) from the late ‘40’s and early ‘50’s , some from the ‘70’s and some from the modern era. I build my own circuit boards so am able to closely match the lighting requirements for each vehicle. The modern E-1 fire trucks have about 43 operating lights including the lights on the gauges on the side panels.
With the exception of the older headlights, I use only LEDs for durability and intensity. All vehicles require 12 to 16 volts (either AC or DC) supply to match the accessories supply of the train transformers. Each extensively lit vehicle draws approximately 90 milliamps. Vehicles not being used on train layouts may be connected to small wall transformers of 12 to 14 volts.
Some of my vehicles have been in constant use in the National Toy Train Museum for six years and are still being used there. In 2007, 2009, and 2011, I supplied the lit vehicles for the Christmas train display at the Nixon Presidential Library in LA. Along with some other vehicle scenes, I created the President leaving his helicopter (operating) and getting into a motorcade with all the appropriate vehicles lit as well.
