I'm wondering if it would be better to start with a 2 rail pilot from another EMD model like a GP35 or something along those lines and modify it to fit the GP30? Or if just filling the gap with styrene is the best way to go? Thoughts? Has anyone converted a GP30?

Well I did my Lionel GP30 and several other MTH diesels using .125 styrene as the spacer. Then use strip styrene to close up the hole and build a coupler pocket. Time consuming, but well worth the effort.

Doug, I've seen your conversions. They turned out very nice. Definitely looks like it was worth the efforts. Out of curiousity, what paint did you use on your Chessie geep?
