Flickering headlight and stopping train

I had trouble like this on my layout in the past, I purchased Gunrunnerjohns signal booster and the problem went away.

It only happens with this one engine.

Yeah, I had two that gave me problems, no trouble with the TMCC engines, but after getting Legacy SD-70, that gave trouble at a couple locations.

Can you describe or post a picture of where it is happening on the layout if it’s only in one area.

I went back and running it it happens in different spots.

I wouldn't suspect the antenna connection since you are coupling the signal with your hand with the antenna.  If the antenna was disconnected, it wouldn't have any effect.

First thing I'd try is to lay an earth ground wire next to the track in that area and see if that cures it.

Probably nowhere, it's not on the Lionel parts site.  The receiver is part of the RCMC board, that's an expensive swap.

I assume this is a wire grounded to the third/round pin on an outlet. Would it have to be a bare wire with no insulation?

Nope, insulation has no effect, just a wire that's going to earth ground as you state.
