It is amazing looking back at this how the cars place this image in the right time frame more so than the locomotive. I guess a lesson learned on scenery. Swap out the vehicles and you can have a completely different era!
I never knew how rare this scene was until I was a little older. During the summer of 1982 when NJT was extending electrification south from South Amboy to Matawan, NJT operated a shuttle between Matawan and Long Branch outside of rush hour. There was an E8 on each end with three coaches between and it was run push pull style.
This E8 was one of two that got New Jersey Disco stripes starting in 1980. The rest retained the old NJDOT blue and silver scheme. Little would I know that those classic locomotives would be gone by 1985. On a warm summer night with the windows open, I could hear the 567 prime movers growling from several miles away lying in bed at night as the last trains of the night came through town from New York City.
Good afternoon,
I was packing up my two K-Line by Lionel SF SD70M engines for transportation to an upcoming show and I thought they might represent the newest prototype in my collection. And it is. This particular engine, SF #204, was built in 1995. My next newest is a U30c built in the 1970s. I run these only at shows, pulling intermodals.
This got me thinking. What engine did I have that represents the oldest prototype? Well, that turned out to be a tie. Both the K4 and L1 were first produced in 1914. Since they shared parts (mainly the boiler), that made sense. Here is my Lionel K4s with the post WWII upgrades.
Here is my 3rd Rail L1s.

Lionel Southern PS4 Pacific #1403 from 2006 catalog. I've never seen this particular locomotive before. The color is quite pleasing and slightly different from most Southern and Southern Crescent greens we are more familiar with. A little darker shade. A lot of detail for an 18 yr old piece! Comes with the long tender w/two Fatboy speakers, RS 5 and 4 chuffs from the factory!
Does anyone here have this locomotive?

You got me thinking Ron. I think these are my oldest and my newest prototypes.

Almost missed FeF, it 11:50pm here on the west coast. Heres' some FeF from the other side of town only when the layout is pulled away from the bay window. It's Xmas decoration time on the house and layout, so layout table has been its wheels and pulled away from the wall and out of the bay window, offering new photo opportunities.
Happy Friday to all and have a great weekend!

Thanks Walt! Yes those curves are super elevated.
Happy Front End Friday all! This week on the layout, I've been running some Christmasy tinplate. First of all, my favorite tinplate train of my entire collection, my MTH Lionel Corp 265e Blue Streak set with PS2.
I'm also running my restored vintage Lionel 264e Commodore Vanderbilt.
On the outer mainline, I've got my MTH American Legacy 763e in gray (also a PS2 model).
Last but not least, I'm running my "Kustom" LNE railbus, which I did a build writeup on last weekend.
Here's the whole assembly running on my layout. Hope you all have a nice weekend!

My front-end view for this Friday shows New York Central 0-4-0 #901 (MTH Premier 20-3261-1) pulling a short train toward the camera at low speed and into the narrow rock-cut on the O-36 inner loop of my 12’-by-8’ model railroad.
This little locomotive running through the rock-cut on the small O-36 oval reminds me of the 4’-by-8’ HO layout that I built just before I quit model railroading for almost 40 years.

Here is the American Flyer (Chicago Flyer) #401 from 1939. A 2-4-4 sheet metal steamer and type 402 tender. Locomotive came with a headlight and remote controlled reverse.
Here is her typical passenger consist in 1939, these cars are enameled but not numbered on the car. They were cataloged however as # 235 Pullman , # 236 (sometimes #236-R) Observation and #234 (sometimes 234-R) Baggage in 1939.

A Festive Front-End Friday, fellow Forumites. This week on the layout, I finally got my prewar Lionel 616 Flying Yankee running again after being deadlined for a couple years. This is the entry level Flying Yankee with sliding shoes instead of rollers and a big lead weight in the power unit instead of a whistle. It has about a million scale miles on it, as you can see by the flaking paint and dented finish. Someday I'll have to restore it, but for now I'm enjoying it "in the rough".
Here's a zoomed-out view from the side, with a bonus view of my Marx M10005 on the Marx layout under the main table.
Here's the Yankee running on the conventional loop of my layout.
