Hello everyone,

 

          I've worked on quite a few of these VL Hudson's and I've been meaning to post this for a while. I just finished repairing this engine, When taking the boiler off please note there's a small piece of linkage that connects to the boiler, if you remove the chassis screws and pull the boiler off the chassis it will  rip this linkage apart. Just an FYI.

THANKS for the tip, but I have NO intention to ever open this baby up! If service is required, it will be sent back to Lionel CAREFULLY packed and insured for FULL value ($1600)!

I well remember filling the lubricator on Ex-Southern Railway 2-8-0 #722 with steam oil before our day's run. It has the viscosity of pancake syrup, and is even thicker in cold weather! My G-Scale Aster live steam engine also uses steam oil, but of a lower viscosity.

Since there are two mechanical lubricators on most "modern steam locomotives", one for machine oil and one for valve (steam) oil, I would sure hope that nobody ever poured valve oil into the machine oil lubricator.

What direction is the proper direction? The "other direction" is a bit vague.

When these were released and a few people had whistle steam issues, Mike R cautioned against folks opening these up. I recall him stating something to the effect of "there was chassis detail attached to the boiler."

 

I wondered what exactly that was .Now I know.

 

As if the under shell mounted, and now dual smoke units weren't tedious enough to work on.
