Two USA trains SD70MACs running under MTH DCS with ps2 boards inside.

Thanks to all! I didn't want to bump it up.

I had twp trains out yesterday. The MTH Dash 8's were climbing "the hill" on my layout.

The track was picked up last winter. With the solid five months of winter in Western NY and leaves falling and such, I thought it would be better. It took so long to lay it all out this spring, I'm thinking of leaving most of it outside. It comes out very fast, it's the re-installing part I hate. I would like to have covers for it. I got spoiled running it in the basement for ten years!!

Thank you all for the kind remarks!

Sure, I understand. How do you feel about picking up leaves, twigs, seeds, bird droppings, etc....?  I never remember that the track must be cleaned after every rain or event.

It's funny how much can mess up an outdoor RR! I'm going to need a power sweeper brush car thing. I was looking at a hand held Dyson and wondering if it would work on a flatcar???

Wait Matt! You live on the easy side of the country! How deep is your frost line???

Now this guy has an outdoor RR!!

I started with DCC and wasn't happy with the performance. I got my first MTH G gauge engine, (challenger) and liked the way it ran so smoothly. At that time, batteries were gel cells. They were extremely heavy, expensive for long trains, and didn't hold up well.

I ran inside for ten years and the equipment list kept growing. With track power, it's less expensive to have large consists with several engines, sound and smoke inside, and they'll run unlimited amounts of time. Someday soon, I may try a battery/ airwire train to run in poorer conditions outside. The newer lithium ion batteries are tempting. I still will stay with track power because of the number of engines I have, and like to run.

No frost line in California, one of the reasons basements were hunted to near extinction during the post-war housing boom. My plans for outdoor won't be a layout on the ground, but one that's elevated on ladder roadbed. Gravity will keep some things off the tracks, but a Scotch-Brite on a stick should keep the track clean. The open grid characteristics of ladder roadbed will help with thermal expansion issues. The build would happen after I move to Texas. No frost line in the Houston area I'm aware of -- just heat, humidity and rain (another reason for ladder roadbed).
