Garrett's 2023 Christmas layout

to kickoff the 2023 build, I am reusing frames built a few years ago.  these 2x3 lumber frames are lightweight and have 2" non-marking rubber wheels for easy repositioning of the layout within the room.  making the layout mobile is probably the single biggest self-help tool.

I reuse a 2x3" lumber frame built a few years ago.  each leg post has a 2" rubber non-marking wheel.  making the layout mobile is the single biggest most helpful aspect of layout assembly.

the horizontal surface is 2" insulation foam from Lowe's.  It's lightweight and easy to carry compared with a similar sized sheet of wood.  I sculpted the edges with a hot wire foam cutting tool to look like a snow bank.

the element of my layout which truly elevates it over my earlier creations is the backdrop.  I used twilight sky colors (light blue, dark blue, lavendar, gray) and painted a quilt pattern.  The effect is a cozy Christmas sky that imagines stars and snowflakes.  It really pops in person with the room lights on.  It takes on an ethereal character when the room lights are off and the village house lights illuminate the scene.

the track design is simpler this year.  the inner loop is O31.  the outer loop is O36.  note- O31 half circle does not fit cleanly inside O36 half circle.  the outer layout has a few short pieces inserted in the middle of the end curves to expand the diameter.

here's the star of the show, the LionChief Plus North Pole Central locomotive and tender.  placing it on the track for the first time each year is a signature moment.

I like to add a lot of trees.  It gives the scenery a density which really complements the tracks and buildings.

Great layout Garrett!  The backdrop is super looking.  Any particular reason for a smaller layout?

life happens.  we have a lot going on this year and time was limited.
