Everyone has their favorite way. I had a discussion with Jeff Kane from The Train Tender, who advocates making up a "paste" of high quality Red grease and some 5W20 quality motor oil to use to grease gearing. Anyone who has postwar Lionel, for instance, especially some steamers will start to squeak and sometimes just grind to a halt, even after greasing and oiling sparingly in the "right" spots, but greasing the motor shaft bearing helps a lot; frees up the running gears, but requires some knowledge and tinkering to get at the motor shaft.
