Hey guys Golden Gate Depot has announced the Santa Fe Great Dome, in Brass!
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Yes, saw someone announce it on the 3-rail forum earlier this week. I am waiting for the price of this car to be announced before I decide to reserve it.
Thanks,
Naveen Rajan
Really great news!
Have been waiting a long time for this car.
Please let us know when GGD posts their price for the 2 rail version.................
I emailed Scott asking if he was going to do the NS business car Delaware as it's an ATSF full dome. He said he would need 10 ordered at around $600 each retail. The cars will be fully lighted with interiors, etc. Perhaps we can get him to bring in extra trucks.
Anyone else interested in ordering a NS Delaware?

Count me in. If we could only get a NS OCS set now.

So, for those wondering the price, there you have it. The NS version would not be more or less expensive.
So has Golden Gate Depot imported brass cars in the past & how do they compare against other brass cars imported years ago by Pecos River Brass or by Overland models? From following posts on these forums, I knew that Golden Gate Depot imported plastic & aluminum passenger cars & I have the El Capitan set from the first run but that they are the only passenger cars, I currently own. But the details on my El-Capitan trucks seem adequate for a $250 aluminum car but not as detailed as the trucks I have seen on brass passenger cars on these forums & on E-Bay. If I were to reserve this car, for $600, I would have expectations of greater details than those on their El Capitan cars.
Thanks,

Scott Mann owns GGD, Sunset Models and 3rd Rail. His father, the late Mort Mann, produced brass models as early as the late 60s if my memory is correct. Pecos River, Overland, Wasatch, Sunset, PSC and others have produced brass passenger cars. All had different levels of detail along with different levels of pricing. I'm sure Scott can do whatever level the demand/price will support.
The problem is - today's $600 car is yesterday's $150 car. For those of uswho do not have $600 for a single car, the used market is thriving. I just saw a gorgeousset of CSX 21" cars go for $50 each!
I just bought a couple gallons of thinner - cellulose acetate - that last year were $28 per, and this year it is just shy of $50 per. Ouch! And bread is six bucks a loaf . . .
Sunset/3rd Rail has made some excellent brass passenger car, in the not too distant past. I have a few PRR P70 coaches, plus one SP Harriman coach. All are beautifully detailed & painted.
Bob Heil has a custom finished Midland Reproductions brass GN great dome that will be used as the prototype. So it should be at least as good as that. But, if you are expecting Key or Lionel Smithsonian level fidelity you will probably be disappointed.
The other recent brass cars for passenger trains, the Lark RPO and Baggage and the '38 Broadway Baggage RPO have been outstanding to me. The reality is the builder is a brass builder first that has adapted to aluminum and plastic. Looking at their recent brass steam should also get you a good idea of what they are capable of and what to expect.
I would be interested in the Conrail version#55.
I reserved my GN 2 rail version.
We will have the Midland Reproductions GN great dome car on display at the Sunset/GGD tables at Chicago and the TCA York show.
Also, in speaking with Scott yesterday, there is also a hobby dealer somewhere that is considering stepping up to make the NS Delaware great dome happen. So let Scott know if you will be supporting this effort.

Scott tells me Ken's RR is the dealer for them. I can't seem to find him on the Internet?
Thanks
I hope this opens up the chance for GGD to offer an Olympian Hiawatha sooner than later.
