If simply changing the browser "fixes" the speed problem and using the old one slows it back down, I'd lean towards something needing cleaning up with IE or the system itself.  It could be any number of things causing IE to slow down.  Maybe the TEMP files aren't getting cleaned up.  Maybe there are a zillion add-ins that aren't being used anymore.  Maybe, maybe, maybe.  While malware could certainly be an issue, there are a lot of things that can slow you down that aren't.

The internet connection could also be an issue but that is a whole other series of troubleshooting steps.

Keep in mind absolutely everything you do online or off is recorded by Google these days.

An interesting Firefox or Chrome browser available add-on is "collusion".  When clicked, Collusion will show you which websites are tracking your web browsing through your direct browsing clicks as well as 2nd and 3rd party tracking companies that are tied to your original destination.  When the "collusion" add-on is activated the chart collusion produces can be eye opening as to how many companies are now trying to track your web movements.  The chart can be reset to zero out the information at any time.

Don't be fooled to think that you are totally anonymous or hidden when you use your browser's "private browsing" feature.  Currently there is no industry standard for what is termed "private browsing".  So one company's standard is often much different than the next company.
