I have a MEC GP40 that I bought last year from a forum member. The sound file it came with was a blower engine which bugs me so tonight I downloaded the original sound file and to my surprise, it's still a blower engine. I then found a random (ps2 3v) GP40 (rio grande) and loaded it's sound file... still blower sounds! Am I missing something simple here? The upload completes, says success, and then the loco starts up I've loaded sound files before on other locos and never had an issue. Is the MTH GP40 sound file just incorrect?

Ok, so I jumped on youtube, and every ps2 GP40 video has blower engine sounds! Must be a MTH mistake. I guess my best option is to load SD40 sound files into it. Only problem i can see is click clack of rails being wrong, although I've never paid close enough attention to know if they are correct as per the number of axles.

Edit.. My best guess is they used the GP38 sound file for the GP40. Would be no difference other than turbo vs blower.

Its not a blower, its the turbo. MTH has a 645 file with a turbo whine that is absolutely ear splitting above about 32 scale MPH. Authentic or not, its downright intollerable to listen to, and I suspect its an issue with the sound mixing in the file being out of balance.  It will probably take trial and error of all of the production runs of GP40s and SD40s to find a file that is acceptable.

The file that it came with is for sure 100% blower (I work on them everyday so I don't think I'm just hearing things). You can even hear the distinct dual exhaust outlet that is especially noticeable during startup. I've tried 3 GP40 files and then listened to numerous ones on youtube and they are all blower engines. Just loaded a SD40-2 and it is correct, as in it is a turbo.

Yeah, it's the 5th RPM level - it sounds like a high-pitched whistle. It's replicated on the ESU 645E3 sound file but nowhere near as shrill sounding.

Like you stated, it probably has something to do with the sound mixing process. Too much of one sound and not enough of another to provide adequate balance.

I had a ProtoSound 3.0 CSX GP38-2 with the same issue as Chris, a turbo-charged EMD sound file.

Well at least I know I’m not the only one that ever had an incorrect sound file from the factory. I loaded the SD40 file in and it sounds great now.

I’ve got a bunch of things with e-bells and physical bee et low on them... the worst with an ebell? NYC FA set.

So far I have 3 engines (CN Dash 9, CN ES44 and a CR Dash 8) and all have EamD sounds from the factory.

David, how about a list of what you user so others can document it and avoid them in the future?
