Tried running a Lionel GP7 legacy loco today in conventional mode.

The engine powers, lights, sounds etc. When trying to get it to move, nothing happened but  I hear a noise which sounds like a motor spinning the motor spinning up in RPM as I increase the transformer.  Killing the power, the spinning noise reduces and stops.

Any  thoughts?

Could it be locked in a neutral position?

The engine is an older model but new condition.  Using a New CW80 transformer.

An item # would help. I.e. 6-#####.

It's possible you loco has Liondrive trucks. If so, turning the truck 180 degrees will allow it to release from the chassis exposing the plastic yoke that is fasten onto the end of the motor shaft.

These have been known to come loose on the shaft allowing the motor to spin freely. Removing the yoke and adding a drop of loctite on to the shaft and replacing was the recommended fix.

Yes. This locomotive has Liondrive trucks.

If you turn it over and look closely. Rotate the trucks and watch for the tabs on to line up, and drop through the slots in the chassis, and the truck will release.

It might only work in one direction depending on where the slots are. Also be careful with the wires going to the electrocoupler.

This is an easy first step, to finding the issue,  before removing the shell.
