Just got some great shots of Lionel J3 Hudson #5452 made by Roberta Cencer, our Collector's Gallery product photographer.

We will be doing an article on this locomotive in the future, but I wanted to share these early views with you. Very Neat!

RickM46,

Okay, so it doesn't have roller bearing rods. I bought my 5452 for pretty much the same reasons you did. To me, it is the epitome of a working New York Central Hudson. It is a locomotive that has the brutish, beefy look of a working steamer. No false glamour about it, which makes it so interesting.  I can just see it on the mainline or in for servicing in all its steamy producing, grimy, blackened glory. As a slightly reformed 3-rail collector, who now likes operation as well, that is enough realism for me to really enjoy this locomotive.  We just got in the Mr. Muffins version without the marker lights and I will shortly see how that affects me as a hobbyist as well.

The 5452 may not be totally accurate for the very detail oriented, but it has more than enough realistic looks to stoke my imagination to "see"  what it might have been like when Hudsons actually ran on the mainlines of the NY Central.

Oh, the class lights. Tsk.

Also, so far as I recall, all Scullin-equipped NYC Hudsons (5 of the original 10 Century "Dreyfuss" Hudsons - and one J1e, the 5344) had roller bearing rods.

If I wasn't already Hudson-poor, I would have probably jumped on one of these. The class lights are an easy removal and filler procedure (have done it on a TMCC J3a).

The photos are indeed handsome - like the Hudson.

Dave,

Let's just say that we would not be investing the time and energy with the new production J3s unless we had something in mind. Can't be more specific than that at this point. Rest assured, we are working on.......well,..."nuff said".

Just my opinion but, whomever does the article, they had best consult the book "Know Thy Hudsons", as there are many, MANY detail differences on each and every NYC Hudson, depending on the specific era photographed. Major details like the PT tenders, addition of the Worthington Feedwater System, elimination of the booster, and roller bearing rods, to name just a few.

Enticing is good. I can't wait to see what "nuff said" is, that much is certain. I hope that you all know thy Hudson's, because I am still at the learning table, lol.
