I was thinking about custom making scale sized rc semis out of the old Lionel semi truck line. Just as an added element of interaction. Unloading coal and using a digger to load a dump truck and driving the dump truck somewhere else (just an example) I'd use speed controllers to cap the speed to a scale 15mph and a hobby grade rc controller (DX8 or DX9). I've seen videos on YouTube of it and it looks pretty cool. What's everyone's thoughts? I'm sure it'll be a pain in the butt but I'm gonna try at least.

That looks similar to the faller car system but I wanted to be able to have full control of certain vehicles which is why I landed on RC trucks instead of automotionfx.

You are aware that Lionel's "Semi's" are more S scale than O scale.

No I was not aware. I guess I assumed that since they used to come with the train sets they'd be the same scale. Does anyone know who manufactures O scale model vehicles?
SpecCast, Norscot, Corgi, Ertl, and First Gear to name a few. Not much in 1:48. The closest scale with a big variety is 1:50 which is just a bit smaller and looks close enough.
Theres tons of stuff on ebay.
You can also check diecast dealers like Diecast Direct, they will primarily have the latest and greatest at a bit higher price point.
